ERS-2

08/31/2000 -- IMPORTANT information for users of ERS-1 and ERS-2 altimetry data from this site regarding:

ERS-2 Satellite
ESA's ERS-2 Satellite

Overview

The European Space Agency's (ESA) ERS-2 Radar Altimeter Satellite was launched in April of 1995 in an orbit that extended coverage over the ice sheets to +/- 81.5 degrees. In April 2005, the mission reached its 10-year operation. On June 28, 2003, ERS-2 lost its tape recording capabilities, otherwise the mission is still ongoing, with all instruments working and providing excellent data.

ERS-2 satellite was designed as a follow-on satellite to ERS-1. Its main task is therefore to ensure the continuity of data measurements supply to scientists and applications-oriented users. ENVISAT will then follow on ERS-2, offering even more powerful and sophisticated instruments than either ERS-1 and ERS-2.
